Marianne Elder is the Senior Art Curator at The Art Gallery of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Prior to moving home to Canada she served as the Program Administrator and Gallery Director at Claremont Graduate University, East and Peggy Phelps Galleries. She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art from the University of California, Irvine. In her current role, Marianne is the lead curator for four exhibition cycles per that showcase a minimum of 16 artists per year. The Art Gallery of Calgary is a non-profit, non-collecting, contemporary art gallery located in downtown Calgary with over 6000 square feet of exhibition space. Marianne is currently working on a collaborative exhibition with the Textile Museum of Canada for an exhibition titled When Women Rule the World: Judy Chicago in Thread, and an exchange exhibition co-curated with Los Angeles Times art critic, David Pagel, that will see Los Angeles painters in Calgary and Calgary painters in Los Angeles. For over 10 years, Marianne has organized solo and group exhibitions of contemporary art in the U.S. and Canada. While in California, Marianne developed more than 34 contemporary art exhibitions each year and directed collaborative projects including the Smith Gallery, Los Angeles in the Zoot Suit Era; the University of Southern California Annenberg Foundation new media exhibition, Labyrinth Project, which included an educational program for the public; and contributed to the book, Bas Jan Ader: Please Don't Leave Me, accompanying the retrospective exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam. Marianne consulted for several Los Angeles area community galleries and non-profit arts organizations. In that role, she created an art education and exhibition program for five community centers and coordinated a contemporary art exhibition program for the city of Claremont. Marianne was the Executive Director of the Gallery of Gifted Youth of Pomona, Inc., a non-profit arts organization for disabled and disadvantaged youth. Marianne served as an Adjunct Professor in graduate level Arts and Cultural Management and Museum Studies programs. She has developed professional practices workshops for emerging artists and guest lectured in colleges and universities in Southern California on exhibition development and design.
